Link building services for lawyers, without the legal-directory trap

Law is one of the most competitive local niches, and one of the most scrutinised. A small, relevant link plan beats a big one, and this page shows what small looks like.

Why lawyers should buy slower than a plumber

Legal searches are crowded and costly to bid on, which tempts firms to buy many links at once. That pattern looks worst. Slow down.

Google's SpamBrain system and the link spam updates since December 2022 focus on unnatural patterns, not on the mere fact of payment. A dozen identical anchors arriving in a week is such a pattern.

So buy slowly. Truly. Two or three placements a month, written naturally and aimed at the right page, will look like an active firm because they are one.

If you want free ideas first, the neighbourhood link checklist covers the bar association, charities and local press. Reviews and the profile come before all of it, as the map-pack tree shows.

Google's helpful content system, launched in August 2022, and the March 2024 core update both target pages that exist only to rank. Take note. A law firm's links should lead to pages a person would actually read, with a named solicitor or attorney behind the advice.

Tools such as Ahrefs, Semrush and Majestic can show the referring domains of the firms above you. Use them to set a target of about two to five placements, then check Search Console after six weeks.

Before you order a legal link

  • The target page covers one practice area, such as family law or conveyancing, in your own words
  • The donor site reads like something a client or a fellow professional would open
  • The article mentions your region or the topic, not just 'law' in general
  • Anchor text is your firm name or a plain description, not 'best divorce lawyer London' every time
  • You have checked your professional body's advertising rules about testimonials and claims
  • You will leave at least a month between batches

Questions lawyers ask

How many backlinks does a law firm need?
There is no fixed number. Count the referring domains of the three firms above you for your main practice page, then close part of the gap in small steps. Quality and relevance matter more than the total.
Do reviews matter more than links for a local law firm?
For the map pack, usually yes. Reviews, category and distance carry most of it. Links help the website pages that attract organic traffic, which is a separate result.
Can I use the same anchor text for all links?
Avoid it. Mix your firm name, the bare URL, and a few plain phrases describing the page. A uniform commercial anchor repeated across placements is easy to spot.
Is it fine to buy links for a legal site at all?
Google's guidance treats links meant to manipulate ranking as against its spam policies, and judges them by the pattern. Keep them few, relevant and editorial, and expect no promises from anyone.
